L’apothéose D’Hercule – François Lemoyne 1733 – 1736
Genre: quadratura, mythological painting
François Lemoyne aimed to compete with Charles Le Brun’s decorative work in the Hall of Mirrors. He utilized a project that Le Brun had previously rejected when the central theme of the Hall of Mirrors was to be the Apotheosis of Hercules. Tragically, several months after completing the work, Lemoyne took his own life by stabbing himself with a knife.
