He utilized a project that Le Brun had previously rejected when the central theme of the Hall of Mirrors was to be the Apotheosis of Hercules. Tragically, several months after completing the work, Lemoyne took his own life by stabbing himself with a knife.

Bouguereau’s interpretation of a famous Roman myth depicts Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, rising from the ocean on a shell. She is surrounded by nymphs, tritons, and putti who admire her as she stands in the classic Venus Anadyomene contrapposto pose, emphasizing her body’s curves while fixing her hair. The painting’s cool pastel colors create a dewy, sea-like atmosphere.

Bouguereau was inspired by Renaissance masterpieces such as Raphael’s The Triumph of Galatea and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, which he studied while on his Prix de Rome scholarship in Italy. Unlike the nudes of Raphael and Botticelli, Bouguereau’s Venus exhibits a refined naturalism that reflects the artistic tastes of the 1870s while maintaining a Neoclassical artifice. The painting meets T.J. Clark’s challenge for late-19th-century Salon painters to depict modern women’s flesh in a Naturalist style while adhering to the Academic ideal of “the body as a sign, formal and generalized, meant for a token of composure and fulfillment.” Although technically perfect and realistic, Bouguereau’s Venus lacks individuality and remains confined to her role as an ideal.

Bouguereau’s Venus was well received and commercially successful. The painting’s strong eroticism suggests Bouguereau’s practical approach to attracting buyers. Unlike Botticelli’s Venus, who coyly covers her chest, Bouguereau’s Venus openly invites the viewer to examine every part of her body, unashamed of her nudity and sensuality.

This skeleton with a lit cigarette in its mouth is a juvenile joke. Van Gogh painted it in early 1886, while studying at the art academy in Antwerp. The painting shows that he had a good command of anatomy. Drawing skeletons was a standard exercise at the academy, but painting them was not part of the curriculum. He must have made this painting at some other time, between or after his lessons.
